Simultaneous interpretation explained?

This is the most frequently used type of conference interpretation. The interpreter translates simultaneously with the spoken word, and the interpreters work in booths.

Why are two interpreters needed for simultaneous interpretation?

​Because this type of interpretation is high-pressure work. The interpreters take turns, as one interpreter will normally only be able to work for 30-40 minutes.

​Only 1-2 persons require interpretation, so why are two interpreters needed?

Because the work load for the interpreters is the same whether they are working for 1 or 1000 participants. ​

​What about equipment?

Interpretation and equipment require different skills. Therefore, we leave the provision of equipment to professional suppliers. We are, of course, happy to provide contact details.

Whispered interpretation – what is that?

The interpreter sits next to the participant and whispers the interpretation in his ear, or the interpretation is provided via portable

equipment. This type of interpretation is only suited for small meetings, site visits, etc.

What is consecutive interpretation?

The interpreter speaks after the speaker has finished.  Used for meetings with few participants, site visits, etc.

Are interpreters specialized in a particular subject?

Yes and no. Normally interpreters cover a very broad range, and therefore it is important for them to receive background material enabling them to learn the terminology before each event.

Does Tolkesekretariatet also provide liaison interpreters for the social and health services?

​No, not normally.

​Can Tolkesekretariatet provide interpreters for all languages?

Actually we can, provided there are fully qualified conference interpreters in the desired language. Here we draw on our international network in AIIC.

Can we reduce the cost?

We always try and find the most economical solution without compromising on quality.  It may well be to your advantage to involve Tolkesekretariatet in the early planning stages as minor changes in the programme can lead to significant cost reductions.
